What is Song Association?

Song association occurs when you are in an emotional state and a song gets linked to an emotion, event, environment and/or specific memory that can now be stimulated simply from hearing the song which can last a lifetime. Therefore, the reason that songs produced specifically claiming to provide some technological therapeutic effect don’t work long term is because they are first and foremost introduced to an individual when they are in a painful state, and the memory of pain is what gets associated to the song. In order for these songs to have a chance of being effective, they would have to be introduced when the person is in a healthy positive state of mind and being.

What is Therapeutic Recall Effect?

Therapeutic Recall Effect (TRE) was first introduced onto practice in 2014 by American bio-musicological researcher and philosopher Glenn P Dewitt who states that Therapeutic Recall Effect (TRE) is what occurs when your brain recalls a song in mind and creates the same therapeutic effect as did when you were physically listening to the same song. Songs that contain a “hook” have a better chance of creating TRE.
