Life Music Coaching

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Life Music Coaching?

Life music coaching is a specialization subset of personal life coaching first put into practice by ALMC in 2019 to help individuals reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mood disorders being affected by stuck song syndrome.

On average, up to 98% of the Western population has experienced stuck song syndrome: recurring songs that involuntarily pop up and stick in your mind either without any known cause, or when triggered by an associated emotion, memory or event.

Life music coaching begins with the idea that a song can become connected to a traumatic event, memory or emotion and can cause problematic anxiety or agitation when the song involuntarily pops up and plays in an individuals mind, over the radio, or over a retail store intercom system.

Likewise, the more one tries to suppress these songs, the more they continue to persist. Studies suggest that individuals exposed to recurring stressor are at greater risk of developing chronic illness leading to a shorter life span than those who manage personal stress and anxiety on a regular basis.

This is where life music coaching can help, by helping individuals create and implement a plan of action to help reduce associated music anxiety disorders.

What are associated music anxiety disorders?

Associated music anxiety disorders is a phrase that was first used by American Life Music Council in 2019 to discuss associated music anxiety (AMA) recurring from stuck song syndrome. AMA is common in the general population, but can be more pronounced and debilitating in individuals struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders.

How do I know if I have AMA?

We always recommend talking to your doctor to address any health or wellness conditions you think you may have. If applicable, your doctor may suggest talking to a life music coach to help guide a holistic self-help plan.

A life music plan aims to improve successful coping, rather than eradicating agitating songs. Two successful strategies can be distinguished: engagement and distraction, which as a life music coach can help your clients orchestrate.

In contrast, studies show that trying to block recurring songs appears less successful than taking a more passive approach such as simply singing a different song. Either way, agitating song awareness can help your clients get to the root of the problem more quickly and provide valuable information to mental health professionals suggesting cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

What is cognitive behavioural therapy?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is evidence-based therapy provided by licensed mental health professionals, and can be effective for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In practice, individuals learn to replace dysfunctional thoughts like ‘These uncontrollable songs indicate I’m going crazy!’ with new, more accepting thoughts.
